Wash Station

It’s hard to find time for big projects during the summer when there is so much other farm work to do, but somehow we managed to get this wash station built during May and June. Now we have a place to prewash all the veggies for our little start-up CSA. There are still some odds and ends to finish up (like running water to it permanently) but for now it works and provide a nice shady spot to clean produce.

We decided to attach it to the shop rather than build another freestanding structure. We started by bolting a ledger to the west wall. Using scrap lumber from a friend’s construction site, we built the counter off of the ledger using 4x4s, 4x6s, and other big, sturdy lumber. One side of the counter is thick gauge metal mesh so that water can drip and drain and not rot and wood. We bought a cast iron bathtub rom the Rebuilding Center for $10 are using that as the wash basin.

We attached a second ledger to the shop ~9’ high and built a gently pitched roof off of that. Then we slapped on some metal roofing and a gutter, and painted it to protect it a bit from weather and water. We laid down ag fabric and wood chips to level out the ground and keep weeds from growing all over it.

And now it’s in use! For now we’re just running a hose over to it when we wash.
And now it’s in use!

We’ve made so much progress this year…
